Health vs. Wellness
Many of us confuse health and wellness as being the same thing, describing them as the overall well-being of your body, mind, and soul, when in fact, health and wellness are two separate parts of well-being, although they are both equally important.
Health describes your quality of life, or the act of keeping your body, mind, and soul healthy. It is the state of complete well-being, which requires practice and care to maintain. Wellness describes general well-being, or the act of living a healthy lifestyle. It is the overall balance of body, mind, and soul, which requires constant management to keep you feeling your best.
In order to achieve this perfect balance between health and wellness, we need to constantly attend to each of the Dimensions of Wellness, which will lead to the overall well-being for our bodies, minds, and souls.
8 Dimensions of Wellness
Wellness is the process of making healthier, more intuitive choices for a more balanced and purposeful life. It is an ongoing process of change and personal growth that varies from person to person; everyone's needs are different, but it is important for all of us to be on our own journey to wellness. With wellness, we are better able to handle day-to-day life, as well as significant life events. Depending on where you are on your journey to wellness, you may be able to handle things on your own or you might need some extra help. This is where the Dimensions of Wellness come in. These dimensions are meant to help you balance all aspects of your life, from family and friends to work and play. Most importantly, the Dimensions of Wellness can help you find a deeper, more meaningful balance within yourself - your mind, body, and soul. Finding the right balance between each of the dimensions is ultimately up to you, but Pitt is here to help. With numerous resources, tools, and services on campus, you can learn how to maintain a healthy, fulfilled life.

The UPMC MyHealth@Work Health and Wellness Center for University of Pittsburgh faculty and staff is an onsite center that treats a variety of health issues. Healthcare professionals at the Center can help you get back to feeling your best, with services like wellness screenings, support for chronic conditions, and online and telephonic resources. Explore the services available to faculty and staff.
Faculty and staff can also recharge and discover healthy tips and techniques that can be used at work or at home with health and wellness coaching. A health coach can bring onsite services to your department or team, as well as provide one-on-one coaching, along with additional services and helpful resources online and over the phone.
MyHealth@Work is conveniently located at Suite 505 on the 5th floor of the Medical Arts Building in the heart of the Oakland campus. It is open Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
